Toy Makers Offer Nothing In Response To Consumers' Crisis Of Confidence
Consumer Reports tells us that the Toy Industry Of America called
"for federally mandated safety testing and inspections. TIA president Carter Keithley said that the industry remains "quite confident about safety of toys in America." But, he said, the recent rash of recalls due to lead paint suggest "there must be some sort of slippage in the inspection system" of toys sold in the U.S. The recalls suggest "we need to take some measures to tighten up the safety of the system," Keithley added. He noted that the association isn't calling for new mandatory safety standards for toys–simply a federal requirement that toys be inspected and tested by a third party, independent and certified lab."
If I were a parent I'd be rethinking my holidays shopping lists. Add to that a credit crisis in the real estate market, and we might finally be seeing the awakening that is the first step to becoming present to the choices we make and the power that brings to transform the condition. We used to be called citizens instead of consumers. Maybe it's time to re-examine that.
The Natural Products Association has been urging the FDA to step up and do their job as mandated. They also took action on their own which resulted in the recent agreement to have all raw materials certified by U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP)
